A Partnership
3rd Grade Outdoor Education at Honey Creek State Natural Area
Last update: 3/9/07

The Friends of Guadalupe River/Honey Creek decided to increase their already successful outdoor education to include A Day of Observation for 3rd graders. For this program to be successful it takes a partnership between several groups. This article explains how each partner contributed to make this outdoor experience a success. It also gives a brief explanation of the Day of Observation.

Partner 1
Friends of Guadalupe River/Honey Creek

The friends group wrote the grant that provided the money for the project. They provided the supplies needed for the project. They paid the teachers to write the curriculum. They assisted in training the presenters. They paid for the transportation of the students. They provided temporary restroom facilities. The group provided the curriculum guides for the teachers and the presenters. They provided the handouts for the students. They provided lunch for the presenters. They presented the volunteers with a t-shirt. They provided a breakfast for the volunteers for the media day in which all volunteers were invited.

Partner 2
North East Independent School District

They approved the plan for the project. They provided the teachers to write the curriculum that included pre-activities, and post-activities. All of the curriculum was coordinated with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills. The curriculum writers assisted in training the presenters. The district provided the outdoor education coordinator to facilitate the project. They allowed NEISD buses to be used to transport the students. They facilitated a media day in which Churchill High School media students developed a video of the educational experience. This video should be available in early 2001.

Partner 3
Texas Parks and Wildlife

They provided the grant money through their Community Outdoor Outreach Program.

Partner 4
Guadalupe River State Park/Honey Creek State Natural Area

They allowed fee free admission to students and presenters. They placed picnic tables at the locations needed for the activities. They mowed areas where the students would be doing activities. They added base and graded the road for safety. They made available a motorized vehicle to transport materials and handicap students to the activities.

Partner 5
NEISD Parent Teachers Association

They provided 50 trained presenters for all the activities. They provided a coordinator of volunteers to assist in the scheduling of the presenters.

In order to make such a program happen it required the cooperation of all of the above. Detailed planning is essential if you want this type program to be a success.
