Water Testing and BioMonitoring
Compass Game At the compass station, students learn how to use a compass and use basic orientation skills to navigate through 7 stations. At each station, a question prompts the students to look and observe their surroundings and make deductions about the watershed. A bearing at each stake guides them to the next station.
As students work through the seven questions and stations, concepts and information learned at other activities is re-enforced and new ideals are introduced. Tree Measuring Station The watershed begins here in the higher regions of Honey Creek State Nature Area. Vegetation, ground cover, runoff, surface water and ground water is briefly touched upon as well as historical and current human activity in the hill country. Major trees and shrubs are identified and the next part of the session instructs kids how to determine basic information about this area of the watershed through observations of the trees. Using only rope and yard sticks, students will be able to accurately measure the trunk circumference, crown spread and tree height. This data is useful in learning about the health of a forest and soil quality. It helps the students learn how to look at the landscape around them and be a better observer.
