PROGRAMS & WORKSHOPS @ the PARK

JANUARY

The following programs are being offered at Guadalupe River State Park & Honey Creek State Natural Area during the month of January. There is no cost for any of the programs other than the Park entrance fee of $6 per adult (children free) unless you are a holder of a Texas State Parks Pass. Saturday, January 10
A Bird in the Hand
8:30-11:00 a.m.

Join Park Interpreter and bird bander Craig Hensley for a morning of birds up close and personal. We’ll be capturing, banding and releasing songbirds that call the park home during the winter, from cardinals and chickadees to goldfinches and wrens. You’ll learn how to identify the birds, as well as learn about the whys and hows of bird banding, including how you can help. Each person assisting in the release of a bird will be presented with a certificate and become a member of the GRSP Bird Buddy Club. This program is free of charge with regular admission to the park. This program will be held at the Rust House inside Guadalupe River State Park.

Honey Creek Hike
9:00 a.m.

Join a trained interpretive guide for a walk through the beautiful Honey Creek State Natural Area. You’ll learn about the cultural and natural history of the area and enjoy the beauty of Honey Creek during this enjoyable 2-mile walk. Meet at the Rust House. This program is sponsored by The Friends of Guadalupe River & Honey Creek. A donation of $2 per person or $5 per family is requested.

Save our American Raptors
11:00 a.m.

Guadalupe River State Park is hosting special guests of the feathered kind and you invited to meet them. Doris Mager, “The Eagle Lady of Florida,” will be on hand for a series of programs with her live birds of prey. She will share her love and passion for owls, hawks and eagles while showing her birds, including a great-horned owl, crested caracara, eastern screech owl and American kestrel, North America’s smallest falcon. These presentations are open to the public and sponsored by the Park and The Friends of Guadalupe River/Honey Creek, Inc.

Kids in Nature: Rappin with Raptors!
2:00 p.m.


Join “The Eagle Lady of Florida” Doris Mager for a program featuring four live birds of prey. You’ll get to see them up close and personal, learn about their natural history and why their conservation is so important. This program will be held at the Rust House inside the park.

Prowlin’ for Owls
Saturday, January 10
6:30- 8:00 p.m.

Owls are a source of mystery for many of us, yet these denizens of the dark have many wonderful adaptations for survival. Join us for a presentation on owls, meet a live owl up close and then head out on the trail in search of great-horned, barred and eastern screech owls. Be sure to dress or the weather. This program is sponsored in part by The Friends of Guadalupe River/Honey Creek. Meet at the amphitheatre in the day use area of the park.

Sunday, January 11
Bird Walk and Talk
8:30-10:30 a.m.

Join us for a bird walk at Honey Creek State Natural Area. We’ll search for the birds that call the natural area home, from over-wintering kestrels and native sparrows to residents including cardinals, wrens and titmice. Please bring binoculars and dress for walking in tall weeds (the park does have a limited number of binoculars for loan). This program is free of charge with regular admission to the park. We’ll meet at the Headquarters parking lot at Guadalupe River State Park.

2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Join Interpreter Craig Hensley for a look at the world of our feathered friends. We’ll check out adaptations birds have to help them fly, check out beaks, feathers and bones close up, try our luck at nest building and end the afternoon by checking out the birds coming to our feeders. Meet at the Rust House.

Stories in the Stars
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Join us for a look at the starry night. We’ll check out the constellations as we discover together who Cassiopeia, Orion and the Gemini Twins were. We’ll then take a look at the Orion nebula and other wonders of the night sky with our telescopes. Meet at the Amphitheatre.

2:00 - 4:00 p.m.

Calling all kids, parents and others! Here’s your chance to see how much you know about our local plants and animals. Join us any time between 2 and 4 p.m. at the amphitheatre and participate in The Great Guadalupe Nature Quiz. Can you guess which skull belongs to which critter? Whose track is whose? These and many more mysteries await your answers during this afternoon of fun!

Join us for an afternoon of discovery as we learn about the lives of mammals that call the park home. We’ll check out furs and skulls, make our own tracks and head out in search of clues of deer, raccoons and more. Meet at the Rust House.

Prowlin’ For Owls
6:30-8:00 p.m.

We’re heading down to Honey Creek, a-hootin’ as we go! Join us for a look at the world of owls followed by a walk in search of screech, great-horned and barred owls, all residents of the park and natural area. Whoooo knows what we’ll encounter!
